Oscar Pistorius: Justice is fickle

Do you remember the recent and famous court cases of OJ Simpson and Casey Anthony? How does the Oscar Pistorius case compare to these? First of all, he took the stand, second, there is no jury, and third, it's not finished yet. There is another difference - It's not that obvious what happened.

Should Oscar be a free man, or should he be in prison? What is just? We know that he killed Reeva, either out of a paranoid fear or rage. Fear of a violent intruder, or rage...out of who knows what. Either way, he did not plan to kill her. It is something that happened in the heat of the moment. He didn't shoot her after careful consideration or planning. He made a mistake..a very big, tragic mistake.

A tragedy happened. One person died, a beautiful, intelligent and famous person. It was a horrible death..a real tragedy - and there will not be justice. Nothing we can do to Oscar will bring Reeva back or undo this tragedy. Many people around the world care so much about this one tragedy, yet are so oblivious to wars and genocides that happened, and are still happening. There are at least a dozen genocides or so that were documented well enough. Some happened because of land partitions and ethnic conflicts, others because of political interests.

Communist governments were responsible for the greatest known political genocides, and unlike the Oscar case, these were well planned. From the Stalinist era in the USSR to Cambodia to North Korea to China - the numbers of people who were killed are staggering. Stalin designed a Genocide by famine in 1932, that killed about 7 million Ukrainians in one year. In China, Mao Zedong copied Stalin's great idea of Genocide by starvation. He eventually realized that that his policies were flawed, yet continued until over 45 million peasants died as a result.

Do I need to tell you that neither Mao nor Stalin were brought to justice?

Coming back to the Oscar case: Prosecutor Gerry Nell asked "Who should be blamed forReeva's death?". Who should be blamed for this death in a place such as South Africa, where sadistic house intruders torture, rape and kill their victims? Weather Oscar took the liberty of killing his girlfriend or weather he was scared out of his mind - Shouldn't some responsibility rest on the  people who are allowing the violence to continue unaddressed, unsolved?

Maybe the South African Government wants someone to take the fall for a violent culture. Maybe they want to show the world that a white male is responsible for it. Whatever the intent, the government and the people are out for justice, and justice will not be found. Its impossible for my Lady to rule just in this case. It's simply too obscure and too complicated.

Why then is the South African government so concerned about bringing one man to justice, yet ignoring large scale violence? To understand how governments see this issue I'm reminded of the famous quote, "One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic." - Joe(ehm..not Joe Slovo - I mean Joseph Stalin. )

Yes, Joe, we understand you now? Justice is fickle.
