QUESTION:
MY son is listening to Satanic music, and he is reading and talking about Aleister crowly. He listens to Sepultura and some others. What should I do?

Answer:
It’s correct, metal music, specifically, black metal bands are associated with Satanism, and this is what those artists want. Nevertheless, most of them are probably atheist/agnostic in their beliefs. Watch some interviews with band members. There are so many of these bands. Some of them really encourage hate and violence. And fact is fact. Hate and violence is … well, hate and violence – its bad. Call an apple an apple.

Have you looked at the lyrics of some of these bands? Sepultura, specifically doesn’t seem to have anything related to proselyting for Satanism. It’s a common theme of resisting society. I think at worst it could be anti-social, at best; it could give a voice to your son. Many people see these metal bands as spokespeople. What must it be like growing, and being a kid in today’s society? There’s a lot of despondence and nihilism. Who really speaks for them, for their inner feelings?

How is your son’s behavior? Is he doing anything strange? Has he suddenly become violent? Has his grades dropped suddenly? Look at people’s actions. That is the main thing.
If his behavior seems to have taken a nose dive, it could be an issue with drugs, and not metal music.
The best you can do is to express some interest in his metal band obsession. Chances are if you fight him on this, he is simply going to see you as part of the elements in society that he must start to resist.
Some Christian people get stuck on the satanic connection with metal music, and therefore miss the psychology behind it all. There are much worse things than metal music. If metal music can encourage someone to think for themselves then it could be a good thing.

The main psychology behind this issue is probably your son’s search for authenticity. I see this as a recurring theme in many metal bands. They are trying to deal with the darker issues of life, that people ignore, and sweep under the carpets.
What are his other interests? Does he participate in wholesome activities? Has he lost his sense of humor?

So this is the good news. The bad news is, if you are a dedicated Christian, that yes, metal music is in the realm of so called Satanism, and not that it leads to it, but it certainly has elements that want to introduce people to it. If you aren’t a serious Christian, then simply look at the psychology behind it.
