Bill Maher and Atheist Fundamentalism

I’ve watched Bill Maher’s documentary ‘Religulous’. I’ve also seen his standup on YouTube and TV. He impressed me even years ago. I think he is a very talented opinologist and comedian. The difference between Bill Maher and other TV hosts and comedians is that he is taken more seriously by people. Recently he’s been sued for some of his statements. I don’t know if that happens often with comedians.

It seems as if comedians in the USA can say anything they want. It’s like they can get away with anything, because it’s a joke, right?

But Bill isn’t just making jokes; he is propagating opinions. He is joining forces with Dr. Richard Dawkins and Atheists are asked to ‘come out’, to stand up for their beliefs. They are campaigning for Atheists to help them keep religion out of school and out of government.

It all seems fine that Atheists should stand up for their beliefs. It’s not right that a Christian or Muslim should dictate to an atheist as to how he/she should live their life. But there has been a little twist in the tale.

Recently Bill Maher has taken his campaign a step further. He has expressed several opinions towards Islam which I would say is the beginnings of ‘Atheist fundamentalism’. Richard Dawkins has said, ‘There is no logical pathway that would lead you from Atheism to those terrible things’. ‘..Terrible things’ – meaning what Stalin and Hitler did.  Yet, Bill Maher is inciting Islamophobia. Islamophobia is the same type of ingredient that fueled the Nazi’s hate for the Jews. The one is like gasoline, the other is diesel.

When it comes to Bill Maher, I’m not sure if his opinions are really his opinions. You may not realize how he flip-flops, because in general he seems to be simply against everything!  He really dislikes a lot of things! That is the strategy of many comedians. Just criticize everything and everyone - that gives you the permission to do just that – criticize everything and everyone!

Nevertheless, there is a thread of consistency throughout his rants. It is my suspicion that he is ultimately protecting the interest of his channel station, or his sponsors.

It is not true that there is no logical pathway that would lead you from Atheism to do terrible things. When any ideal becomes strong enough to be forced upon other people, such as Bill Maher’s ideals against Islam, I would say that that ideal could lead to ‘terrible things’.  And it does. If Bill Maher is promoting Islamophobia, then he is promoting the general and ongoing wars and opression of the people in the Middle East.

You don’t need to actively participate in the systematic oppression of an ethnic group for it to continue. All you need is to do nothing – and even worse – fuel the opinions of the oppressors.
